Northumbria University London is excited to open its doors to students for the ground-breaking MA/MSc Multidisciplinary Innovation postgraduate programme. Commencing this Autumn, the programme is set to offer students a transformative educational experience that combines design thinking, entrepreneurial leadership and real-world briefs from global organisations like Unilever, RealMe, Reckitt Benckiser, Herman Miller, Santander, NHS Metropolitan Police; RAF, Northumbria Water, Bank of England, National Trust and others. The programme develops creative confidence and entrepreneurial mindset contributing to personal and professional identity.
The MA/MSc Multidisciplinary Innovation programme is designed to be practical, through application of theory to live client briefs while being supported by design professionals – our Innovators in Residence – at the studio in London. This offers students the opportunity to engage with a global network of professionals and work on a diverse range of projects, right from the get-go.
Regardless of their discipline, the MA/MSc Multidisciplinary Innovation programme opens doors for its graduates to a multitude of post-study options. The unique aspect of this programme is that students study through collaborative and cooperative, enquiry-based learning addressing real-world challenges that matter to external partners and to wider society. Students will also benefit from a comprehensive teaching approach comprising lectures, seminars, tutorials, study and independent work on live briefs. The programme aims to equip students to tackle real-world challenges and develop viable innovation solutions that make a positive impact in the world.
“We are thrilled to offer this exciting new postgraduate programme at our London Campus,” said Dr. Guy Brown, Dean of Students and Northumbria University London Campus Director. “Our commitment to innovation and design ensures that our students receive an exceptional education that prepares them for success in their chosen fields.”
He further highlighted the unique opportunities the programme offers, stating, “By the end of the programme, students will have collaborated on strategic innovation and research projects with a diverse range of organisations, from micro-charities to global corporations. These invaluable experiences enable our students to enhance their CVs with real-world accomplishments, demonstrating their ability to drive positive change and make a significant impact.”
With strong emphasis on innovation and strategic thinking, the design- led MA/MSc Multidisciplinary Innovation programme prepares students for employability through working on a series of live client briefs during their course. Graduates from the main campus have seen resounding success, progressing on to careers such as Creative Account Manager, Innovation Strategy Consultant, User Experience Researcher, Global Category Manager, and many more.
Dr. Heather Robson, Head of Department, Northumbria School of Design, expressed her excitement and pride in the MA/MSc Multidisciplinary Innovation postgraduate programme, stating, “We are thrilled to be expanding our Northumbria Design School offerings to our students in London and this exceptional course is a great starting point. Our focus on building critical, ethical skills, cultivating professional attitudes, and enhancing reflective and evaluative abilities ensures that our graduates are well-equipped for success.”
Heather further commented on Northumbria University’s commitment to developing well-rounded professionals, adding, “We take pride in providing a comprehensive educational experience that empowers our students to excel in today’s dynamic work environment. With the combination of theoretical knowledge, practical projects, and industry engagement, our graduates emerge as strategic thinkers and innovative problem solvers, ready to make their mark in their chosen fields, and equipped to take on, and create the jobs of the future.”
