Frequently Asked Questions

We know that there’s a lot to think about and do in preparation of starting university, and that you’ll have a lot of questions – some of which you won’t have even thought about yet! We’ve put together some information around the questions we get asked most frequently. If your question hasn’t been answered from the list below, get in touch.

How do I apply for student finance?

Student finance applications are made directly to Student Finance England (SFE). Find out more about the process on our Student Finance page.

My student finance application has been approved, when will I get my first payment?

It takes on average 4-6 weeks to be approved for student finance from the start of the application process. Once the application has been approved your 1st payment will take around 2-4 weeks after the day your application was approved. Please note the payment dates on your approval paperwork are guidelines and are not accurate dates.

I am facing financial difficulty while waiting for my maintenance loan payment, what can I do?

If you feel you are struggling financially please visit the Student Finance Team on campus who are here to help you. They may be able to offer you some financial help with a ‘Bridging Loan’ until your Student Finance is approved. This is a loan and will be repayable once you receive your first payment from Student Finance England.

When will I get my timetable?

Once you are fully enrolled at the university, Student Services will provide access to our timetabling system ‘TermTime’.  You will receive an email with instructions to access TermTime within 24 hours of submitting your online enrolment.

How do I access online classes?

All online classes take place via the video conference platform WebEx. Each lesson that takes place online, will have a WebEx room number displayed on TermTime.

How do I submit assignments online?

Assignments are submitted via your Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) called Weblearn. You will be provided with a login once you are registered and after the cooling off period.

Can I work full-time and study full-time?

University is a big commitment and you will struggle to fit in lectures and independent study around a full-time job. Your lectures, workshops and tutorials will total nine to 12 hours per week and you are also expected to complete independent study totalling 28 to 31 hours per week. Applying for a maintenance loan through SFE will help to cover your living costs. Take a look at our personal time planner which gives you an idea of how you can plan part-time work around your full-time study.

Where can I view semester dates and holidays for the year?

Take a look at your academic calendar dates and breaks here.

Is there parking on campus?

There are no car parks at any of our campuses. The easiest way to reach your campus is by public transport. Find out more about about your campus and the easiest way to get there on our Campus Information page.

What equipment do I need to start my course?

Take a look at our Equipment Checklist to make sure you have everything you need to start your studies.
