Steve’s previous role in education was as Deputy Vice Chancellor at Birmingham City University. During his nearly 4 years in this position, Steve was the lead executive for professional services, and oversaw the University grow to over 31,000 students on campus, with improved financial sustainability, and modernising the physical and technological estate.
Steve is very experienced working as a leader in regulated environments, having worked a number of years in financial services, energy & utilities, in both large household names as well as smaller enterprises. Before Higher Education, he had also worked to deliver the turnaround of an FE College during the difficult years of austerity in public finance. In all cases, he believes that being people and customer (student) centric are critical success factors. In addition Steve has held a number of non-executive roles, most recently by serving on the Board of the NHS for Coventry & Warwickshire.
He is a law graduate, qualified accountant, and holds an MBA from Manchester Business School. Outside of work, when not spending time with family or friends, he enjoys walking the dog in the country, watching Formula 1 and attending car shows and events.
